Exploration: A Scrapbook, 2023
Installation
As a white Settler born and raised in Winnipeg, I was struck by an article of an Indigenous artist that stated that Winnipeg was the worst place to be Indigenous. The instinctual reaction of feeling personally attacked then started me thinking about how this could be. So, I started my journey of Truth and Reconciliation through the predominately white woman’s activity of scrapbooking. Symbols of colonialism and the systemic racism that institution creates are juxtaposed with images of Indigenous peoples found in Canadian history books.
This artwork and my journey of Truth and Reconciliation was used in a collaboration with a grade 12 class as part of their English/Indigenous Studies course (2024).
