Reading Sinclair Lewis’s book, It Can’t Happen Here, published in 1938, I was struck by the similarities of the political promises in the book to those being made by Donald Trump in the 2024 Presidential campaign. The book is a description of the dismantling of democracy in the USA. After a visit to the Trump Tower in New York and seeing the “golden escalator” where Trump began his political quest, I became interested in the conversation regarding capitalism’s relationship with democracy.
